Welcome!

I’m Mary Casanova, author, storyteller, and writing mentor. I think you’ll enjoy exploring my website. There’s something here for everyone!

Since I fell in love with writing in my teens, I’ve spent my life crafting stories with the goal of writing stories that matter and engaging readers of all ages. Much of my inspiration comes from my daily life near the Minnesota-Canada border…but ideas come from everywhere and I’ve also written novels set in Norway, France, and Belize.

I want to thank everyone whom I’ve met or who has written to me with their positive comments about my picture books, chapter books, novels for young people, or my young adult/crossover novels. I’m grateful for the privilege to explore characters and issues with you, the reader!

May the adventures continue!

What’s New?

Northwoods Lullaby

Coming April 28, 2026 ● Pre-orders available

Northwoods Lullaby invites young readers into the quiet magic of the northern woods at bedtime, where moonlight shimmers on the lake and gentle forest sounds settle the world to sleep. Inspired by the serene landscapes Mary Casanova knows and loves, this soothing new picture book pairs lyrical, comforting verses with enchanting illustrations by Jordan Sundberg that celebrate the beauty of nature’s nighttime rhythms.

Perfect for winding down at the end of the day, Northwoods Lullaby is a tender tribute to the wild places that calm the spirit and spark a child’s sense of wonder.

Writing Camp 2026!

Northwoods Young Writers Camp is a five-day summer retreat designed specifically for teenage girls who love to write. Held each June on Atsokan Island in Rainy Lake — a serene, wooded hideaway far from everyday distractions — the camp offers a unique opportunity to forge creative connections, deepen writing skills, and grow in confidence. Under the mentorship of award-winning authors such as Mary Casanova, Margi Preus, and Cristina Pippa, campers participate in a mix of large- and small-group workshops, one-on-one conferences, and peer critique sessions.

Before camp even begins, participants read a novel by one of the host authors to anchor their discussions and writing work. During the retreat, they write in inspiring locations — whether on a screened porch, a lakeside deck, or quiet spots around the island — and then get feedback in a supportive, nurturing environment. When they’re not writing, campers can relax by the lake: swimming, kayaking, exploring, or sharing stories around a campfire.

By the end of the week, each writer leaves not only with sharper craft and fresh inspiration, but also with the tools to give and receive constructive criticism and the bonds of a caring, creative community.
